CHÃ DAS CALDEIRAS, FOGO ISLAND
Chã das Caldeiras - Ilha do Fogo, Cape Verde, 2018
“The constant movement of alteration of the landscape by nature introduces uncertainty in Chã’s daily life. Nevertheless, the habitat is established once more . It is built from ruins, on top of the remains of its old houses, excavating the magma; using simple tools, structures and methods to adapt to the new landscape. The inevitability of change is absorbed and requires intuitive knowledge of survival.
The mystical connection of the inhabitants of Chã with the territory is much more than I will ever be able to understand. (...) It is incredible how the symbiotic and respectful relationship with the land manages to be so genuine and honest. “Our heart lives here!” they say.”
